Specialized Tarmac, 2012
Retail Price / Prix de Détail: $2100 + taxes
Exceptional Features:
- The general quality of this Tarmac frameset is, as per usual for a Specialized bicycle, extremely notable for the price-point. Just because this is the base-model Tarmac it doesn’t mean that you won’t still get the same industry-leading ride-quality characteristics that all Tarmacs have boasted through the years. The Specialized Tarmac is the race bike that other manufacturers are striving to achieve, whether they know it or not; it has incredibly well balanced race-geometry that’s fun to ride while not being overly aggressive (i.e. it’s very stable when descending at speed), it’s extremely compliant vertically , making it a very comfortable bike to ride, it’s very stiff torsionally, making it nimble and snappy for acceleration or climbing, AND it’s amazingly solid (Tarmacs are very difficult to break).
- The “FACT” full-carbon fork with tapered steerer is light, stiff and compliant; it’s unusual for bike companies to spec a full-carbon fork at this price-point because most people wouldn’t know to think of what the steer-tube is made of… ask us if you don’t! Everyone should know how their bicycle is built.
- The SRAM Apex 10-speed groupset is one of the most important new products the road-market has seen in several years. (Ask us about SRAM products when you see us in the shop!)
- 52/36 chainring combination makes the huge gear-range of the SRAM Apex groupo more “race-bike” focused, though conversions to an easier gear-range can be easily made.
